An E-Mail from Namibia

While we are not in the habit of posting E-Mail sent to us (simply for lack of server space!), we just felt that we had to share one French Fry lover's lament and excitement:

Greetings from Namibia. Here (& in South Africa) the "slap" chip (it is Afrikaans - means soggy) is a disgusting apology for a french fry. It is overcooked and reheated in old old oil, normally at Portuguese take-away shops. Sold with a Vienna (sausage) or Russian (sausage) - horrible.

Thank heavens there is one shop here in Windhoek which sells crispy chips - in new oil - called ... "The French Fry". Thank heavens. Also, our crisps (potato crisps) are called chips - which makes for mucho confusion sometimes.

I visited Amsterdam and Belgium in September this year - heaven. Just seeing the beautiful packaging (a cone of white crisp paper) filled with glorious fresh, crisp french fries, with that blob of their wonderful (probably unhealthy) mayonnaise, was enough for a culinary orgasm.

Now this is a French Fry fanatic! Of course, we can understand a jaunt to Amsterdam simply for an order or three of "Met". While "orgasm" may be a bit strong, we are certainly shaking a bit in anticipation.
