The Official French Fries Pages:
Official US French Fry Color Standard

We now have the
Official U.S. French Fry Color Standard!

The French Fry can have a range of colors. We wanted to show you what the United States Department of Agriculture uses to determine good French Fry color. We did the legwork (and dialled a lot of different phones in Washington, D.C.) and found out that you can only get the chart from Munsell Color Co. The problem is that they wanted $80 for it in 1996, and we didn't have that kind of cash laying around for a one-off gag.

One of our intrepid readers, however, not only got hold of one but sent it to us! Unfortunately, we were idiots and lost the mail so we can't tell you his name unless he writes to us.

Click on either image for a better view (larger scans are 338x440, 98KB & 108KB, respectively).

There are some clarity problems we will try to take care of. We need TIFs or bitmaps of the files, or better yet, new scans with more modern equipment. We do appreciate the JPEGs we received, though. Make no mistake! We waited four months for these and are very grateful. However, bandwidth for higher quality scans is no longer the problem it was back in 1998.

If you want an actual French Fry Color Standard for yourself, the phone number for Munsell Corporation is (914) 565-7660 or (800) 622-2384. If this is your first order, you'll have to pay with a credit card or order C.O.D.

Munsell ain't paying for this and they don't seem to care about these pages, hence, no gratis standard sent to us. If you happen to have a spare French Fried Potato Product Color Standard just lying around somewhere would you consider sending it to us? We'd be happy to take an old one (with or without grease spots) if you're in the industry and have to buy a replacement. We're pretty sure Munsell doesn't do trade-ins so you'd help the Official French Fries Pages andi> cut down on landfill.

The collection fund for the Standard has now been dissolved. Since we kicked in the entire amount to begin with, we don't have to worry about returning anything. We did get a few pledges, and if they're sent in, they will now be used toward a fact-finding tour of Québec so that we may study Poutine in its native habitat more trips to Belgium to report on the Belgian Fries.

We're also interested in similar materials from other countries. Electronic format would be greatly appreciated, but isn't necessary.
